Hi Doc!

Here is my situation: I am dating a guy who I am in love with. We started seeing each other in November 2008 but in February he told me we should break it off because he’s not ready for anything serious as he is going through a divorce. He said he needs time to find himself.

After that the discussion, things didn’t change much. We still text each other and talked and hang out like before but there was no sex. I did not want to let it go, so I kept hanging out at his place and recently we have started sleeping together again.

He has made is very clear that he is not committed to me or the relationship. In my mind I feel like he is the man I want to marry and thoughts of getting pregnant intentionally have crossed my mind.

He always uses a condom during sex but last night he did not which surprised me. I found myself praying that I get pregnant.

I am 35 years old and in dire need of a family or a child. I know I should cut off this relationship but I also think that if I hang around long enough he will change his mind and if I accidentally get pregnant that may turn him around and commit to a relationship.

Am I being selfish and what advise do you have for me?

Would you really get pregnant; knowing damn well that he’s not interested in anything but sex with you in order to try to land this guy? That’s called “fraudulent paternity” and frankly is pretty despicable; not the least of which is for your own unborn child. Is that all you think your children deserve?

Seriously, snap out of this right now. Wake the hell up. This guy has told you that all you are to him is a sex partner (I debated on whether to make it bolder just to make the point, but decided against it – you know what I mean however!)

Yes, you are being totally and completely selfish here! You’re not thinking of him and you’re sure as hell not thinking of your future child!

Here’s what would happen if you got pregnant: he’ll bolt. You may be able to go after him for child support payments – and you’d get it – even thought he doesn’t want you or your child; but the reality is that you’ll never have him. This is true even if he agreed to stay around! He would be there physically, bu 16; not emotionally, spiritually or intellectually.

Please, PLEASE don’t do this. Your own kids deserve so much better than this – even if you don’t think you do. Kick this guy to the curb, get yourself healed right away and go find someone you can love that loves you back. Then, become the woman of this new guy’s dreams, get married and have that family you want.

DO NOT try to entrap this guy by getting pregnant – it’s going to backfire, trust me. I see it almost every single day!

Invitro fertilization was initially developed in 1978 for women with damaged, blocked or missing fallopian tubes. In such circumstances, egg donation is the only procedures in in vitro fertilization treatment that can help a woman conceive a child.

Egg or ovule donation is a process where a woman provides up to 10 or 15 egg cells for assisted reproduction purpose. Ovule donation involves the in vitro fertilization procedure as the eggs get fertilized in the laboratory after removal. After the donor donates eggs, her role is complete. Since the donation process is part of the Assisted Reproductive Technology, there are some guidelines laid by the American Society of Reproductive Medicine and the FDA that has to be followed before a woman donates her egg cells.

The invitro fertilization procedure is carried out when other treatments have failed. However, the procedure usually requires more than one cycle to succeed. According to a survey, the birth rate is 30 to 35 percent for each IVF cycle for women under the 35 age group, whereas it is only 10 percent for women at age 40. Even though there are treatments that can be successful 20 to 60 percent of the time, any type of fertility treatment costs more than many couples can afford.

There are a lot of reasons that couples can’t conceive and finding the reasons for that inability takes time and money. The earlier you begin your process, the higher chance you have for success is the best advice for hopeful parents. Diagnosing the issue that is preventing couples from conceiving is the first step. If the first tests and treatments are unsuccessful, those costs are small compared to what comes next. Determining which treatment to try next can get very expensive. Unfortunately, there are no treatments that offer a 100% success rate but there are treatments with higher rates than others. The treatments that can offer the highest chance of success under the worst circumstances are unfortunately the most expensive.

As a last resort before giving up completely, in vitro fertilization treatments can be tried. First, Gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) mixes eggs and sperm together in a lab, and that is then surgically implanted into the womb. This particular treatment can cost anywhere between $8,000 to $15,000. Next, implanting a verified fertilized egg into the womb in a process called zygote intrafallopian transfer (ZIFT) can be tried. While this process may have the highest chance success rates, it will cost at minimum $10-20,000. And that doesn’ t include the pregnancy itself.

Unfortunately, there are many factors and no amount of money can guarantee that treatments will be successful. It is entirely possible to spend well over $50,000 in a futile attempt to conceive a child and have absolutely no luck whatsoever. That’s one reason that finding assistance for funding is such a difficult prospect. Some states do require insurance companies to foot at least part of the bill for diagnosis and treatment of fertility issues, but there are only 13 states where that requirement exists. In some of the 13 states, there are loopholes that ensure the insurance companies will not have to cover any costs, even with the requirements.

However, there are so many programs available to help. Many fertility treatment centers do have financial counselors that will help with attaining a low interest loan, connections to public and privately funded assistance, and some insurance companies are sensitive enough to help with drug costs and other funding issues. As long as there is hope, there is almost always a way to find funds for it. Rememb er, even though fertility treatment cost may run into the tens of thousands of dollars, the life of that baby is priceless.

Infertility is defined as a male’s or female’s inability or reduced biological ability to contribute to the conception of a child. More commonly, it is defined as the inability to become pregnant after 12 months of intercourse without birth control. Infertility may also refer to a woman’s inability to carry a pregnancy to full term.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is a major treatment in infertility when other methods of ART have failed. It involves surgically removing eggs (ova) from a woman’s ovaries, fertilizing them with sperm in the laboratory, and returning them to the woman’s body. Both Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer and Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer are ART procedures, which involve removing the woman’s eggs, mixing them with the male’s sperm , and implanting them in the woman’s Fallopian tubes. With ZIFT, fertilization takes place outside the body, and with GIFT, fertilization takes place inside the body. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is a procedure in which a single sperm (especially donor sperm) is injected directly into an egg.

Egg Donation: Occasionally, a woman may require to use a egg donor, depending on her age, and egg quality.

There are many types of fertility treatments for those who are having difficulty conceiving a child. Success is not ensured with any of the different types of fertility treatments. As well, certain treatments are now raising ethical issues both inside and out of the medical community.

A basic infertility diagnosis is the first step toward fertility treatments. Often, a couple needs to try conceiving naturally for at least a year to 15 months prior to seeking fertility treatments. In some cases, couples may not be diagnosed with any fertility problems.

When no fertility problems are diagnosed, couples may be given specific instructions as to when to conceive, based on the woman’s ovulation cycle. They may also be given instructions on sexual positions, holding positions after sex, and in other areas, in order to help increase the chances of getting pregnant. In some cases, those having trouble conceiving may use injections of sperm, rather than intercourse to increase likelihood of pregnancy.

When problems are diagnosed, fertility treatments depend significantly on the type of problem. A woman with scarring in the fallopian tubes may undergo surgery to remove scarring and increase chances of pregnancy. As women age, age of ova also can affect ovulation in a healthy woman, meaning that women may not always ovulate at predictable times or eggs may not be viable.

In some cases, fertility treatments involve injection of fertility medications to boost ovulation and cause women to release possibly more than one egg per month. These medications are usually hormone based, and they do have some unwanted side effects, like weight gain, skin breakouts, and instability of mood. Many women feel these side effects are worth the price.

Men may also take medication to boost sperm count, if this is one of the recommended fertility treatments for a couple. Medications used may result in pregnancy, but also carry a higher rate of both miscarriages and multiple births. In men, temporary feminizing characteristics may occur.

When injections and other methods still do not result in pregnancy, couples may look to in vitro fertilization in order to achieve pregnancy. In this procedure, eggs and sperm are harvested from the couple, and then combined to create an embryo. At the appropriate time of the month, several embryos are injected into the uterus.

In vitro fertility treatments are highly expensive. Usually one round of in vitro injection costs about 10,000 US dollars (USD). Others believe in vitro compromises ethical issues that have not been thoroughly resolved. For example, since more than one embryo is implanted, this significantly increases the risk of heavy multiple births.

While a woman can usually carry twins or even triplets to term, a greater number of babies means greater health risks to all the unborn children. In these cases, doctors may strongly advocate aborting some of the embryos. This position is thought by many to be a violation of religious ethics. As well, such fertility treatments often create embryos which will never be implanted, and thus must be destroyed. Some people believe that th ;e creation of such embryos with no intent to give them a chance at life is morally wrong. Others worry about these embryos being donated and later exploited for the purpose of stem cell harvesting.

Since many in the public have registered concern of fertility treatments that result in extra embryos, some in stem cell research are now putting forth effort to harvest stem cells from elsewhere, like from umbilical cord blood. At some time in the near future, the use of embryos to harvest stem cells may no longer be an issue.

Others forgo common medical fertility treatments and explore alternative or complementary medicine. Some follow strict dietary practices, pursue acupuncture, or take herbs that appear to increase fertility. Since the medical community does not study many of these methods, it is of value to research results of these practices, and safety, prior to attempting them.

It’s estimated that around one in six UK couples have problems conceiving, so IVF fertility treatment is very popular. Recent research suggests that this treatment could be made more effective by combining it with acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medicine, which works by inserting thin needles into specific points of the body to stop pain and control symptoms of illness.

Couples in China have used acupuncture for centuries to promote female fertility, and scientists have been studying its impact on IVF for a number of years. While the results of these studies have generally been mixed, the latest research indicates that acupuncture definitely helps couples to conceive via fertility treatment.

Undergoing IVF treatment is an expensive and stressful process, which has an average success rate of just 15%. Couples without children may be eligible for up to three cycles of IVF on the NHS, but there is often a long waiting list. The cost for one private cycle of IVF is a whopping £2,500, which many people find prohibitive.

The Dutch and US research, which looked at more than 1,300 women and was published in the British Medical Journal, found that every 10 cycles of IVF treatment with acupuncture would result in one extra pregnancy. The overall results indicated that women who had acupuncture were 65% more likely to undergo successful IVF treatment compared with those who underwent dummy versions of the acupuncture treatment, or those who had no extra treatment at all.

Rowan Pelling of the Guardian spoke of her positive own experience of acupuncture and fertility. She said: “After the first treatment, when I felt currents of energy move across my body, something very strange happened. I not only felt as if a portcullis somewhere inside had lifted, but I ovulated for a second time that month, just as my regular period was due, and I fell pregnant with my first son as a result.”

Acupuncture is thought to aid fertility and boost fertility treatments merely because it relieves stress. This may sound simplistic, but a fertility expert recently said that fertility problems could stem from busy couples that just don’t have sex enough or stressed out women whose bodies are so frazzled that they’ve started to display menopausal symptoms. However, infertility can also stem from bigger problems such as polycystic ovary syndrome (POS), endometriosis, miscarriages and poor sperm count.

However, Professor Edzard Ernst, a leading alternative medicine expert from the Peninsula Medical School in Plymouth, said that the reliability of these acupuncture trials is dubious. He said: “On the face of it, these results sound fantastic. I would, however, be very cautious as much of the observed effect could be due to a placebo response. IVF may not seem to be “placebo-prone” but it probably is: if women expec t it to be helpful they are more relaxed which, in turn, would affect pregnancy rates.”

You may not even want to think about it. You may even have hopes that it’s all one big nightmare, and that when you wake up, it will be over. Chances are, the signs are there, but the willingness to face the reality is not. Yes, you may be pregnant.

If you have been intimate with someone and have engaged in unprotected intercourse, you could really be pregnant. Before you make any assumptions, take a look at yourself and decide if you have cause to strongly believe that you could be expecting a child.

1. Did you miss a period? You know about when to expect your menstrual cycle. If it’s been a little while, then it could be the first sign that you are possibly pregnant. If you have irregular menstrual cycles, then, this sign could be a little tricky for you to detect. You may need to just go for it, and take a pregnancy test.

2. Are your breasts sore, tender and/or swollen? They may actually hurt like crazy with only a light touch. If you are pregnant, that soreness could be due to an increase in hormones as your body starts preparing for a baby.

3. Feeling hot all of the time? It could feel like you just can’t get cooled off, and it may not even be summer! If you keep track of it, check to see if this hot feeling or elevated body temperature keeps going on for more than about 2 weeks. If so, you may be pregnant.

4. Is your stomach puffy? You know how your stomach feels right before your period. You may have that bloated feeling now. This bloating may even cause your clothes to start feeling tighter than usual. It could be a hormonal change causing this if you are pregnant.

5. Do you constantly have to pee? You may have to keep going to the bathroom, between classes, after lunch, while waiting for the bus…just all of the time. If you are pregnant, your body will start to produce more blood and fluids. The extra fluids dump into your bladder and that’s what may be making you go, what feels like, every minute of the day.

6. Does everything around you stink or smell very, very strong? You may be extremely sensitive to smell, even to the point where the smell makes you feel sick. An increase in estrogen, yet another hormone in the female body, could be causing this if you are, in fact, expecting.

7. Got a nasty “taste” in your mouth or, even worse, do you gag or throw up at just the thought of certain foods? Your favorite food could even be one of the culprits that is making you nauseous and causing you to vomit. Known to most as morning sickness. This feeling or gag reflex can happen at any time of day, unfortunately mostly early on in your pregnancy.

The Most Common Fertility Treatments : Get Pregnant

For some couples, they have tried to make all the lifestyle changes they possibly can, and realize that medical intervention is the only viable option for them. In this case, what are some common fertility treatments for these couples? What are the side effects, and are they typically successful?

Assisted Reproduction Fertility Treatments

Assisted Reproduction is the phrase used in the medical community to describe medical intervention for couples facing infertility. Here are some common fertility treatments and how they work:

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI). This procedure which is also known as artificial insemination is often combined with hormone treatments to boost egg production, and can help couples with low sperm count, unexplained infertility, or cervical mucus problems. Semen is collected, and then delivered via a catheter inserted through the women’s vagina and cervix to her uterus.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). IVF may help those with pelvic or tubal damage, or male infertility. It is the most commonly used of all the fertility treatments available. The woman takes drugs to stimulate egg production, which are surgically removed. Then eggs and sperm (from her partner or a donor) are collected and combined outside the body, and inserted into her body to develop after fertilization takes place. “In vitro” means “in glass” (that is, in a test tube or laboratory dish).

Sperm Donation. Fertility treatments do also include those necessary when a male partner is not present or does not have viable sperm. This procedure is performed using sperm from a typically anonymous donor; of course, a sperm donor can be a male friend or associate.

Donated Egg. This can help those whose infertility problems are due to premature menopause or some other disruption of ovulation.

Surrogacy, Traditional and Gestational. In traditional surrogacy, another woman carries and gives birth to a baby conceived with her egg and your partner’s sperm (through artificial insemination). In gestational surrogacy, the surrogate carries and gives birth to a baby conceived with your egg and your partner’s sperm, then transferred as an embryo to her womb.

Fertility Treatments Available for You

The proper procedure that is best for you and your partner is one that only you or the two of you together can decide on, of course with your doctor’s help. Many of these fertility treatments listed are very expensive, so of course your own personal budget will need to be considered. Additionally, there are some who have religious beliefs or moral opinions about many of these fertility treatments, and of course this is a personal decision as well. The bottom line is that while so many of these options are becoming more and more common, and safer as well, the final decision will need to be yours. After all, you are the one who will need to live with the consequences and responsibility of this decision for the rest of your life. So, speak openly and honestly with your doctor and be sure that you completely understand all of these many choices so as to make the most informed decision possible.
